Sign detectives

TRAVELLING

Discuss with your child what types of signs they have seen around the neighbourhood, street or at school.

Create a list of words or categories that describe the purpose of the different signs.

For example, you might have a category of signs that warn people of ‘danger’, such as wet floor signs when there has been a spill in a supermarket.

You may have a category of ‘directions’, such as keep left road signs.

Or you may have the category of animals, such as kangaroo signs on the side of the road.

Keep your list so that you have it when you are out and about.

Every time your child sees a new sign, compare it to your list of categories.

Does it belong to an existing category, or do you need a new category?
