The next time you are preparing food (e.g. a cucumber or potato salad), ask your child to point out where you would need to cut the vegetables if you wanted two pieces to be the ‘same’ size (this will likely be close to a half rather than being exactly a half).

Talk with your child about halves being the same size.

Another example might be needing a half a cup of flour for your dish, so talk about what this means in relation to the quantity of flour and the whole cup.
