Creating mandalas

A mandala is a circular pattern, created from different shapes rotating around the central point of a circle.

Using a range of natural materials you find in your backyard or local environment, create a mandala with your child.

You might start your mandala with a central object, such as a flower or stone. Then build your mandala by placing objects around the central point to create a rotational pattern, for example:

Discuss with your child how the different objects rotate and repeat, paying attention to the shape and orientation of the items you find. How big can you make your mandala?
